Mileage and Amenities and Microwaves - Oh My! 7 Important Questions to Ask When Booking Contractor Digs
Getting your digs booked feels great, but before you commit yourself to potentially substandard accommodation in a less-than-favourable area, you should consider some important questions first.
Solely focusing on the contractor accommodation market puts us in a unique position to understand firsthand what the booking process is like for contractors, what you wish it was like, the kinds of properties on offer and what you’re really looking for in accommodation.
So without further ado, check out our list of 8 questions we think are essential to ensuring quality digs with the facilities you need in a location that works for you.
1 - What’s the location like?
This should always be the no.1 question on any contractor’s list because your stay revolves around where the job is and how easy it is to get to. With a little bit of research though, you’ll be giving yourself every chance of finding the best of both worlds: an area that’s close enough for easy travel to and from the job, that’s pleasant to stay in and has all the amenities you need.
You never know when you’re going to need a late-night run to Tesco Express.
2 - How close is it to the job?
The second most important thing to consider for your own sanity while you’re away is to double check and check again that the accommodation is as close to the job as you think.
Breaking down the miles is all well and good, but it doesn’t take into consideration roadworks, speed restrictions and traffic. 6 miles is fine at 60mph, but 30mph the whole way? We’ve got road rage just thinking about it.
Double check the journey time on something like Google Maps or Waze using the postcodes of the digs and job location. This should give you the quickest route, but remember to factor in unexpected roadworks or getting stuck at every red light and learner driver along the way.
3 - What are the catering facilities like?
It’s been a really long day at the site and you’ve been craving steak and chips. You decide to treat yourself and stop at the shop on the way back to pick up the essentials, because all contractor digs have a kitchen, right? Wrong. There is but a microwave in your unit.
Although the majority of properties are well equipped to meet the hungry expectations of contractors, it’s best not to take the facilities you’re used to as a given.
If you aren’t much of a cook, make sure there are decent restaurants and takeaways in the area or that Just Eat and Deliveroo operate in that location too.
4 - Is parking included?
As a contractor, your vehicle is probably one of the most important (and expensive) pieces of equipment you have, so peace of mind that it’s being stored safely and securely when not in use is so important.
Some properties may advertise access to parking, but that could be on-road or not in the direct vicinity, so it’s best to check exactly what “access to parking” means and how secure it is.
Access to private, secure parking in a garage or enclosed driveway is of course preferable and for some a deal breaker, so don’t forget to enquire!

5 - How long will I be staying there?
Although this will vary significantly depending on the nature of the job, even during shorter stays you could be spending time at your accommodation for longer than a night’s sleep.
In situations like this, it’s not great to be stuck on the leaky top floor, or have nowhere to get some fresh air and stretch your legs.
Your length of stay will also mean you’ll have to pay closer attention to the area, too, as this will make all the difference between a great stay and a bad one.
6 - How can I resolve issues at the property?
Being away from home for work can be stressful without the addition of issues with your accommodation. It’s important for your own wellbeing and peace of mind that whoever you book with is easy to contact and has processes in place should there be a problem at any time during your stay.
Pay particular attention to anything that might be broken or out of the ordinary, because if this hasn’t previously been reported, the charges for these damages can wrongfully find their way back to you - not ideal!
7 - Am I forgetting anything?
It might be a basic question, but checking and checking again could be the difference between a decent stay and a terrible one. We also understand that all contractors are different and expect different facilities, features and amenities that go beyond these 7 questions.
In any case, they should get you off to a great start in ensuring you get the best possible accommodation for your next contract.
